No One Be Like You P Square
The astonishing triumph of Donald Trump can be traced to the bitter defeat of Occupy Wall Street, a pro democracy movement that transcended left and right, sparking unrest in hundreds of cities and rural towns in 2. Occupys consensus based encampments demanded that President Obama get money out of politics. Instead, we got mercilessly smashed by his progressive administration. Now the dark irony of history is bashing back. Trump an uber wealthy, partially self financed candidate who promises to drain the swamp was elected president just one week before the fifth anniversary of Mayor Bloombergs eviction of the Zuccotti Park encampment. President elect Trump, a charismatic strongman with an autocratic temperament, is not what millions of Occupiers were dreaming of when we took to the streets against the monied corruption of our democracy. Now, as the nation experiences a disturbing rise of hate crimes against the groups singled out by Trump during his campaign, protests descending into riots are rocking our cities. These visceral protests will undoubtedly continue into 2. Celebrated progressive Kshama Sawant, a socialist councilwoman in Seattle, has already called on people to disrupt Trumps inauguration in January. At the same time, despite the excitement of seeing militants marching in the cities, leftist activist networks are buzzing with the painful realization that contemporary protest is broken. But there are things that no one tells you about living in Korea. Know what you pay and get paid fast. Accept all major cards and get deposits as fast as the next business day. Connect a Square Reader to your device or slip an iPad. The dominant tactic of getting people into the streets, rallying behind a single demand and raising awareness about an injustice simply does not result in the desired social change. Nominally democratic governments tolerate protest because elected representatives no longer feel compelled to heed protest. IMG_20171021_082300_654.jpg' alt='No One Be Like You P Square' title='No One Be Like You P Square' />The end of protest is not the absence of protest. The end of protest is the proliferation of ineffective protests that are more like a ritualized performance of children than a mature, revolutionary challenge to the status quo. Activists who rush into the streets tomorrow and repeat yesterdays tired tactics will not bring an end to Trump nor will they transfer sovereign power to the people. There are only two ways to achieve sovereignty in this world. Activists can win elections or win wars. There is no third option. Protest can play an important role in winning elections or winning wars but protest alone is insufficient. Just think of the three years many activists spent on Black Lives Matter versus the 1. Trump to sweep into power. It is magical thinking, and a dangerously misguided strategy, for activists to continue to act as if the masses in the streets can attain a sovereignty over their governments through a collective manifestation of the peoples general will. This may have been true in the past, but is not true today. What is to be done now American activists must move from detached indignation to revolutionary engagement. They must use the techniques that create social movements to dominate elections. The path forward is revealed in the rallying cry of the people in the streets Not My President This protest slogan is eerily similar to the one used by Spains 1. M Movement of indignados who set up anti establishment general assemblies in May of 2. No Nos Representan You Dont Represent Us during their election. But when the refusal of the indignados to participate in the election resulted in a shocking victory for Spains right wing, the movements activists and supporters quickly internalized an important lesson that Americans must now embrace. Nvidia Geforce 9700 Gt Manual. Realizing that new forms of social protest are better equipped to win elections than disrupt elections, many of the indignados transformed themselves into Podemos, a hybrid movement party that is now winning elections and taking power. A similar story can be told of the Pirate party in Iceland, or the 5 Star Movement in Italy or the pan European Diem. Focus on the form, not the content, of these hybrid movement parties their organizing style is the future of global protest. Concretely speaking, activists must reorient all efforts around capturing sovereignty. That means looking for places where sovereignty is lightly held and rarely contested, like rural communities. Or targeting sovereign positions of power that are not typically seen as powerful, such as soil and water district boards or port commissions. Protests will remain ineffective as long as there is no movement party capable of governing locally and nationally. This is a struggle for sovereignty. The endgame is a populist movement party that wins elections in multiple countries in order to carry out a unified agenda worldwide. The spark for this electoral movement is bound to emerge from an unexpected place. It could start from a women led backlash against the pack of patriarchs governing the globe Putin in Russia, Erdoan in Turkey, Duterte in the Philippines, Xi in China and now Trump in America. Or maybe activists will start moving into neglected rural cities low population areas of America and prepare to sweep city council elections. That is the strategy Im pursuing in Nehalem, Oregon, where I recently ran for mayor. In any case, avoid falling for the exhausting delusion of endless urban protest or the nihilistic fantasy of winning an insurrectionary war. The difficult path of merging innovative protest, social movements and electoral parties is the only viable way forward. And with only two years until the next election in America, there is no time to waste. Micah White is the author of THE END OF PROTEST. This article originally appeared at The Guardian. UConn Is Going Back To Square One And Thats A Good Thing. Welcome to the Deadspin 2. Leading up to the college football season kickoff, we will give you previews of the 2. Now, No. 9 UConn. Gone is Bob Diaco and all his adorable, made up rivalries and ideas of broadcasting college football on Nickelodeonhe gave it his best, I guess, but it turns out even an innovative genius like Diaco cant afford a three year record of 1. So he, like the drunken coeds fiendin for some of that good ass mac and cheese, got kicked to the curb at the conclusion of the 2. Instead of taking any sort of risk at all and hiring someone else to come in and start plugging the numerous holes that have the Huskies hull scraping the ocean floor, the UConn athletic department administrators decided to play it safe and turn back to the man that made them wonderfully average. Randy Edsall is back in the saddle after a tumultuous four and a half year run at Marylandwith the Terrapins, he went 2. Terps fans, he finally got the boot in October 2. UConn waited another year and a half before it made its move to snatch back the one that got away. Edsall will now be tasked with accomplishing same trick he pulled off when he took the Huskies to the big leagues in 2. UConn not completely suck ass. Somehow, itll feel even more impressive if he can do manage it now, given the current pathetic state of the program. Last season, UConn ranked dead last in the entire FBS1. If you are looking for a silver lining, I suggest you look elsewhere the Huskies were revolting to the eye, being shut out twice and topping 2. By comparison, the defense was the fucking Steel Curtain, doing its very best to keep opponents from topping 3. UConn failed to hit the 3. To remedy this, Edsall went out and hired Rhett Lashlee, who took a 2. Auburn in order to have full run of the Huskies offense and put himself in a better position to nab a head coaching gig down the line. Tigers head coach Gus Malzhan, a known offensive force in the college coaching universe, finally turned the reins over to Lashlee three games and two losses into the 2. Lashlee responded by leading the offense to a win against LSU the next week, the first victory in what would become a six game winning streak in which the offense topped 3. The Huskies now want him to recreate some of that magic for them, though hopefully people will understand Lashlee is going from cooking with kobe beef and Mauviel pans to a Betty Crocker playsetthings will almost certainly get better, but lets be reasonable about what better can and will actually look like. For instance, three quarters into UConns season opener, better was starting to look like simply hitting double digits against an FCS team. Quarterback David Pindell, a junior college transfer, was named the starter at the outset of the season it only took a couple quarters of check down heavy play against Holy Cross for the UConn coaches to realize the error in their ways. Pindell finished 1. AAC opponents, but not against a team thats coming off a 2 4 finish in the Patriot League. With UConn trailing 2. Pindell was pulled in favor of Bryant Shirreffs, who filled in to the tune of 9 of 1. He led the Huskies on two scoring drives and also got to do something only a select few Huskies quarterbacks have had the past three years kneel the ball to secure a win. Considering Shirreffs couldnt beat out Pindell in the offseason, I have little to no confidence that we wont see Pindell back under center by seasons end. But, for now, Shirreffs is UConns starting quarterback. Regardless of who ends up taking snaps, theyve been been blessed with the gift of Arkeel Newsome, a compact running back that laid a big ol turd rushing wise against Holy Cross one yard on eight carries but otherwise should be the teams deadliest offensive weapon. With Newsome having an off game, redshirt freshman Nate Hopkins stepped up, delivering a 1. Newsome is a senior, and with 1,5. UConn gameplan, especially given Lashlees up tempo, space friendly offense. That said, if the offense can work Hopkins as the every down back and use Newsome out of the slot or backfield more often he was second on the team with 4. Huskies. Continuing to work Newsome into the passing game is also a strategy implemented out of necessity, as the receiving corps lost Noel Thomas, who was the team leader with 1,1. In terms of receivers that can provide a boost, junior Hergy Mayala had the best performance of his career against Holy Cross, hauling in nine catches for 1. Download Game Miami Nights 2 For Pc there. The 6 foot 2 Canadian hasnt shown much outside of last years 9. Houston defense, but as a big guy on the outside, hes likely going to become the favorite of whoevers throwing him the ball. Behind him, youve got Keyion Dixon, Aaron Mc. Lean, and Tyraiq Beals. The defense, now being run by coordinator Billy Crocker, switched over to a 3 3 5 in order to shake things up and, with what should be an improved offense, keep improving on its actually decent 9 turnover margin from a year ago that tied the Huskies for 1. UConns defense was also quietly one of the better at bottling up opposing running backs and stiffening their backs in the red zone, two things Crocker showed a talent for coaching while building up the Villanova defense to excel in those areas. While the Huskies decided to have an extra man patrol the secondary, thanks to a bevy of serviceable upperclassmen, UConn should again field a solid front seven, err six, this season. This all starts up front with defensive end Luke Carrezola, who led the team with 1. The senior is joined by a pair of fifth year guys in tackle Folorunso Fatukasi and fellow end Cole Ormsby. In a 3 3 5, I wouldnt expect any of these guys to post ridiculous numbers, but Carrezola is a mountain of a man, so I expect him to show out for more than the two tackles he registered against the Crusaders. Behind them, senior linebacker Vontae Diggs, joined by redshirt junior Chris Britton and redshirt senior Junior Joseph, round out the linebacker corps for UConn. Diggs was second on the team with 8. Huskies, which is great news considering Joseph, who logged 8. Holy Cross. Hes still expected to play moving forward, but its something to keep an eye on given they boast few proven playmakers behind him. The secondary will almost assuredly be home to the teams leading tackler this season, with Jamar Stevens1. Crusadersand corner Tre Bell being the two names to know here. A Guy To Know. Shitty outing against Holy Cross aside, Arkeel Newsome is too damn good to be on this roster alas, this is the trade off of allowing 4. Fresh off setting the Connecticut high school state record in total rushing yards, Newsome was the first Parade All American to sign with UConn in program history when he committed the Huskies back in 2. Four years later, hes the teams most explosive running back, kick returner, and, maybe, receiver. Newsome boasts burners, a wonderful array of quick cuts and jump stops, and some of the softest hands youll see on a running back. He ranks fifth on UConns admittedly brief list of all time rushing yards leaders and, according to the New Haven Register, is now 1.
